This particular drawing has rendered itself somewhat momentous to me, because at the time that my utterly lovely, patient, saint-like commissioner requested it I was seized with SO MANY visions of how to accomplish it, and drove myself crazy trying to do justice to the mythos of the situation and the very unique relationship between Loki and Sigyn that can be inferred from the glimpses of her we still have. In the end I was struck most deeply by the phrase used to describe Loki as “the burden of Sigyn’s arms”, which brought to mind a very specific sort of temperance and strength not necessarily wrought in muscle, but unwavering loyalty.
So, in honor of that. Loki and Sigyn.

It’s not as though fidelity makes of one, some sense of purity.
It’s not as though loyalty comes so very easily.
it’s not as though love is without it’s prices.
If mankind is allowed it’s complexities, then should not the gods be given theirs? He is her burden, to care for him when her sons are lost. To say there is no hate, no anger at the loss is the very greatest disservice, and not all of that internal violence is directed at them. No, some, some would be directed at the only love she has left. To say that he is the only one who wanted to watch the world burn is ludicrous.
Compassion is not always weakening.
Loss does not always make you stronger.
Sometimes, you are not allowed to fall apart, because there would be no one there to pick up the pieces. For you hold those same pieces of the man you love. There are times when you have to hold it all inside, and just wait for Ragnarok to come.
I’ve always thought that Odin gives me wisdom, Thor gives me strength, Sigyn is patience and compassion, and Loki gives me wit and free spirit.
