How to Survive a Health Crisis or Chronic Illness in Marriage | Reader’s Digest

A medical crisis or lifelong health condition rewrites the script of your relationship. Your roles may change drastically. Your future doesn’t look the way you’d hoped. Sex, money, work, chores, fun — they’re all different now. “Managing the way an illness affects your marriage is just as important as keeping up with medications and doctor’s appointments and treatments,” Dr. Sotile says.

“Today, most illnesses aren’t short events. They’re processes that go on and on and on, possibly for the rest of your lives. And both of you will need different things at different times in the process. Couples who take responsibility for this can build stronger, closer marriages despite the presence of illness.”

Since I haven’t seen any posts about it on Tumblr, I figured I’d make the post myself! #heardwhilstdisabled is a trending hashtag on twitter, has been on-and-off for awhile obviously, and it’s about the common, casual microagressions the disabled of all stripes have to deal with. It’s UK- and AU-based primarily from the looks of it but I would think it applies to most disabled people – I certainly know I’ve heard my share of this kind of ableism. Here’s more tweets (source is The Indepedant):

@DamonLord #heardwhilstdisabled “that’s so sad. That baby will grow up with a blind father. We should call Social Services on them” About me and my son

I made a comic about what it feels like (to me) to cope with having an invisible illness and the judgements and accusations that sometimes come with invisible illnesses.

I did it in green ‘cause that’s the color of the Celiac Awareness ribbon Celiac is one of the “imaginary” “all in your head” “stupid” “hypochondriac” invisible illnesses I live with.

So here. Be nice to people in general, because it’s the right thing to do, but if you can’t at least do that then please don’t be an asshole when someone tells you that they have Lupus or Celiac or Fibromyalgia or any of the other things that we live with every day that you can’t see on the surface.

Cheers.

i want a relationship but i want them to be like a friend to me, i dont want the relationship to be all about kissing, making out and sex i just wanna hang out with them, and go places, and just have fun wherever we go

This post is surreal because that is exactly how a healthy relationship should be yet we’re convinced this is a weird and unusual thing to ask of our partners.

For the month of October, PACLA will be sharing information to help make Halloween safe & accessible for everyone! Autistic children deserve a #posAutive experience in an often overwhelming time of
year. We ALL do. Look for the hashtag #AccessibleHalloween, contribute your own ideas and accommodations, and share widely! The more people we reach, the more inclusive we can make this holiday. Thanks and may we all have a HAPPY and #AccessibleHalloween!

Image Description: Orange textured background, with a large hashtag at the top, #accessiblehalloween, and a large number 1. A black banner stretches across the meme, with white text reading:

Strobe light might seem fun to create a “scary” atmosphere, but they are not safe for those with epilepsy or sensory sensitivities to lights. Strobe lights can trigger seizures and migraines. Lanterns and soft, glowing lights are a safe alternative that will let ALL know they are welcome.

My favorite thing about people who “don’t like Loki but love Sigyn” seem to not acknowledge that more often than not, the two are a package. Sigyn is more than aware of her husbands character, but I personally believe there’s a reason why they work so well.

Sigyn is vicious, Sigyn will be faster to the draw in cutting your neck open and sucking the blood out of you. And this is something multiple people have talked about. Sigyn isn’t you’re passive goddess, she isn’t your love and light here to balance Loki. She is a force to reckon with and I love her so much for it.

There’s a part of me that wants to see someone try and work with Sigyn after shit talking Loki and His followers.

Sigyn scares me. Mostly She’s been supportive, but there was something that happened this summer where I got a taste of this – kind of cold, pragmatic, really unsympathetic attitude about something She decided would be best for me – Her, not Loki, He just went along with it, and the whole situation really surprised and dismayed me. It has, in fact, worked out very very well, but. It’s one thing to know deities will make decisions like that, and another to be on the receiving end of it and get what felt like, “What are you gonna do about it, huh? Suck it up. I don’t care how you feel about it.”

I’ve never worked with her myself, but I do include her in my general offerings, and my impression of her is as follows:

Just think about it. She’s Loki’s wife. If you think she is more unlike him than she is like him you’ve got another thing coming to you. Sigyn is sneaky, she must be clever enough to keep up with him. She’s probably clever enough to outwit him.

Sigyn is calculated. Loki is more likely to make a mess of something because he didn’t think it through or didn’t care enough to think it through. Sigyn doesn’t do that. She sits back, she thinks, she waits. She weighs up her options and then she decides.

Sigyn doesn’t take shit. She doesn’t take shit from Loki, and she doesn’t take shit from anyone for choosing him as her husband. She certainly won’t take shit from you.

The last paragraph seems pretty dead-on; I haven’t enough experience with Her to weigh in strongly on the rest, but I have no doubt that She can be every bit as strategic and plot-y as the deities Who have more of a reputation for that.

I very much agree trying to work with Sigyn without at least having respect for Loki (even if you personally dislike him) would be a very very bad idea.

Sigyn is very patient in my experience, but that doesn’t mean she takes shit. Sigyn knows the respect she deserves and while she doesn’t expect more than that you’d damn well not try to give her less – and part of the respect she wants is respect for her family unit. (I do not wish to work with her children, myself, but I’ve paid my respects to them for her and they have tokens on my altar by her.)

I suspect she’s one of those people who would chew her partner’s ear off for doing something shitty and then give you the Look of Death if you DARED to step in and start berating them for something you had no stake in. Sigyn and Loki are a Thing, and you’d damn well better remember it.
